Washing machine leaked

Q: I live in a 10 year old condo with engineered (oak?) flooring. My washing machine was leaking for likely weeks or even months. I did not realize it until water started coming up through the floorboards in hallway nearby. I dried it out as quickly as possible, but cannot know duration of leak. The wood floors were slightly discolored with small gaps between few boards.

Chinking between gaps in cypress plank floor

Q: We have a 30 year old cabin in the mountains. It has Cypress floors installed with up to a 1/2″ gap between each length wise. I am assuming this is because there is no HVAC and temps inside may vary between ~20 deg and 80 deg F. Problem is in the kitchen where food and liquid can spill I’d like to seal the gaps.

White spots on floor

Q: I have Douglas fir floors in my upstairs bedrooms, and in two of the rooms I’m getting milky white spots all over the floor. They look like water stains, but I don’t think they are, because they’re all over the place. I put a dog bed by the window in the master bedroom about 3 months ago, and the spots are the worst around the dog bed, you can see where the bed has been sitting.

Milky footprints appearing on old floor

Q: About 8 years ago I put an extension onto my lounge room and had matching hardwood floors installed. It was professionally coated with polyurethane. Some time later (months to years) a few foot prints gradually started to appear, not on the new work, but on the old floor next to the new work. They are a milky colour.

Toilet overflowed onto hardwood floor

Q: We had a 2nd floor toilet overflow est. 5-8 gallons of clean water covering approx. 50 sq. feet of engineered wood floor. (It seeped through to first story.) We immediately soaked up all standing water with towels and dry-mopped the floor. Now, 36 hours later, there are no visible signs of deformity to the wood.

Replacing or darkening a laminate board that is lighter than the others

Q: I’ve got Balterio Quatro 8 Laminate flooring in Oak Barrique colour. The fitter was excellent regarding the actual fitting, but careless in that one plank smack in the centre of the living room has noticeably lighter areas than the rest of the room.

Switching from wax to polyurethane

Q: I have oak flooring in my home. The couple who built the home finished the floor with a product from Bruce called Dark and Rich. It’s a colored liquid wax type product. My wife and I love the floor, however, can we strip the floor down and poly it instead?

One side of floor is heaving

Q: My sister has 3/4” hickory installed throughout her house. Only one side (west) has heaved horribly at both corners of the room. When I talk about this floor heaving I’m talking 6 inches to a foot at peak. Extending a good 8 feet long by 4 foot wide. One area 6 weeks ago and now the other corner area today.

Contractor won’t fix dirty finish job

Q: We had our old maple floors buffed and varnished with Bona oil varnish this week by a professional (in business 21 years). Unfortunately, he did not clean the entry adjoining the dining room before applying the second coat. (We had cleaned everything before he started the job, but due to the odor ,we were told not to stay home.)
