Q: I applied 2 coats of water based sealer and finish on an unfinished ash floor. I’m not happy with the results and want to use oil based finish instead. I bought Zar semi gloss. Is there a certain length of time I need to wait before applying the oil based polyurethane?
I have already sanded it with 150 grit sandpaper and cleaned off the dust. What applicator would you suggest for the oil based poly? Thanks for your help.
A: As soon as moisture levels have returned to normal after applying water based coatings you can proceed with applying more finish. We are talking hours, not days. So, you should be fine to proceed. Apply the solvent based coating according to label instructions. Some finishes apply very nicely using a short pile roller. Other coatings cannot be rolled on, in which case the best method is to use a lambswool applicator attached to a wooden block while cutting in the edges with a bristle brush.

Water based finish buff/coat over oil based?
I have a floor on which a customer put 3 oil based coats. The customer wants to know if I can buff and coat the floor with a water based finish. Is this okay to do? Will it dry right?
Hardwax oil finish
Are you familiar with O*** P**** oil? How does it compare to Waterlox? I really like the look and benefits (easily repairable) of a hardwax oil finish. It seems technology has made even this type of floor low maintenance.
Adding oil over water based finish?
I recently had my oak floors refinished with water based poly. I would rather have had Oil but because of time constraints at that time I opted for the water. I want to put a couple of coats of oil on top. Can I just rough up the floor and…
