Q: I’ve got narrow oak board floors. My dogs have taken the finish off by coming and going in and out the door. I’ve used a rag with turpentine to correct scratches, is this okay?
A: I’m not sure how applying a solvent containing pine resin will correct scratches on hardwood. The big problem with surface coatings such as varnish/polyurethane is the wear factor. They are difficult to ‘touch up’ and not have it show. There is something to be said for oil finishes or oil and wax. It takes constant effort to care for them, especially if a person expects floors which are walked on to look like furniture that you don’t. If the wood has discolored, gray from lack of finish and exposure to moisture and dirt they will have to be sanded to clean wood. Then you can decide the best way to finish them to suit your circumstances.
Follow-up: Thank you for your help. I’ll sand this small area of floor and finish with wax. You’re a very helpful service, thanks again!
