Q: My son bought a home recently. Where the sellers had an area rug on their floor there is a white streaking, worse along the edges, about 2 ft wide. It’s not tacky. Appears like it’s one with the wood. We tried hardwood floor cleaner and buffing, tried mineral spirits, but nothing is working.
A: This sounds like what floor finish would look like if it was cracking.
You may want to do a repair test spot. Rub down a small area with fine sandpaper, remove the dust and brush on a thin coat of polyurethane. See what it looks like when dry. See if it adheres. After a few days, put some tape on it and leave it over night. Then pull it off.
