Q imported from our old site, Face Lift Floors: My husband installed oak boards on our stairs. I am planning on painting the backs and the railing white.
Can you tell me what kind of paint would be best? I have 4 kids so it has to be durable.
A: I work with polyurethane coatings. I am not a paint expert. I will tell you this, however. Use a good specialty primer such as Zinsser first. The last thing you want is for your paint job to peel.
I would go to your local paint store and inquire regarding their recommendation. With proper priming, a latex should work without the “chipping” that often happens with oil, especially when the previous coating has not been prepared to accept it. Which type is up to the paint expert.
