How long to refinish, stain, and polyurethane?

Q imported from our old site, Face Lift Floors: How long would it take you to refinish, stain and polyurethane, the floors in a 1400 sq. ft. home over three stories? Living, dining, stairs, halls, four bedrooms (approx. 14′ x 10’each)?

A: In my case, approximately 7-10 days.

How long will it take me to sand my floors?

Q imported from our old site, Face Lift Floors: I am wanting to remove old stain off of the floor and just put poly on the natural wood color. The home improvement store recommended a Random Orbit Floor Sander. When looking online for that tool it looks small. I am doing a Livingroom, Dining room and Hall. Will this take me all day, and what steps will I take.”

A: To be honest, the first step you should take is to phone a professional to do this job. It really isn’t the sort of thing that a novice should attempt to do.

However, if you insist on trying, I would suggest a belt sander for the main floor area. Start with rough grits and work down to fine until the floor is clean and smooth. You could do the edges with a random orbital sander or an orbital sander. One uses discs. the other uses sheets 4X8.

I have to tell you. This is going to take you days and days. I don’t know how many. I use very powerful, expensive equipment to do this job. Your main floor would take me a full day, or even a day and a half to have it prepared and ready for a coat of polyurethane.

That will give you some idea of what you are up against. Kind of like trying to remove all the tarnish from the copper roof of Old City hall in Toronto with a toothbrush.
