Q: I recently had a room converted to hardwood floors and asked that the floors match the existing wood in the house. I’d like to send you pictures to get your opinion. Apparently the existing wood is “heart pine”, possibly antique. The company that installed the new floor is telling I got “heart pine”, but it doesn’t look the same.
A second professional came out and told me the problem was the floors were a different type of wood, but from what I’ve found out online there seems to be no set definition of heart pine and that it comes in different %. Any advice on how to not be taken advantage of by the company that did the install?
A: My view is that I would never tell a home owner I can exactly match a new floor with an older one. Wood changes over time, certainly in colour.

Staining two species of wood to match?
Q: I have stairs that are pine and oak. I want to re-stain. Is there anyway to make them match? A: Not that I'm aware of. Two different species, one soft wood and the other hard. Even the grain is totally different. The best you can hope for is complimentary.
Matching new (heart pine) hardwoods to 95 year old hardwoods
Q: I had termite damage in one room of my 95 year old home. The room required new flooring. The other rooms have a dark, consistent appearance. The new flooring was stained, but its appearance is noticeably lighter and the grain is heavier. My flooring contractor said the new flooring…
Can I stain a pine riser to match my oak step?
Q: Can I stain a pine riser to match my oak step? A: Not very likely. The absorption allowed by pine along with the colour of the wood alone will make it near impossible to get a great match, though the colour they become may compliment the oak tread.
Pine stair tread
We recently removed the carpeting on one of our circa 1970 open stair case treads to find a pine stair tread. We love the look of the wood but wonder if pine is a good material, it seems a bit soft for stairs. Each tread will need much refinishing due…
Finishing pine stair treads
I'm refinishing my pine stair treads in my late 1800's house. I have rough sanded and am getting ready for finish sanding. Should I use anything as a sanding sealer? Most importantly, what finish coat/product should I use? The treads are softwood so not sure urethane would be the way…
