Q: I have pine wood floors coated with polyurethane. They are about 80 years old. Some of the wood, usually under a bed or throw rug, has lost it’s color in spots. It’s the wood itself, not the coating. It looks like bleach has taken the color out of the wood in streaks, bleach like spots on wood floor. Sometimes small areas, sometimes large.
What could be the cause and what’s the cure for this? Thank you.
A: I don’t know for sure. It sounds like ultra violet bleaching.
Note from Webmaster: here’s an article titled “Fading and Damage from UV Exposure” that states “Color deterioration in wood floors occurs from three sources: UV exposure, heat and moisture.”
