Q: I have read and been told sand on site maple is more unstable than oak. We are renovating our house which, will have spray foam insulation, and a new furnace with HRV unit. Should we be concerned we installing maple floors? Which is okay re: maple vs oak wood flooring?
A: No, I wouldn’t be concerned. Make sure the flooring is well acclimated before installation and try to avoid very high humidity in summer and very dry conditions in winter. Sounds like you have it covered. But don’t be concerned if you get an occasional little gap here or there. All wood will expand and contract a little. Make sure the floor has an expansion gap along the outside walls.
Strip or sand oak stairs
I have relatively new oak stairs that were finished very poorly by the contractor who built the home. 6 years later, the poly is still in good shape mechanically, but I would like to improve the cosmetics. Since this a small but time consuming job, I was going to put…
Oak wood floor is lifting
I have recently laid a oak floor in my living room and dining room. The floor has started to lift. Is this common and does it settle down after a while?
Staining maple (or oak, ash, birch)
We are ready to lay in a new entry way-kitchen-dining room wood floor. Today we were told not to go with unfinished maple because it can not be stained due to it being closed (close?) grain. What hardwood floors, other than oak, can we substitute for maple. We do not…
I'd like to put in White Oak throughout 3 bedrooms, a dining room, a hall and foyer. What would that cost, in Toronto? I want HARD wood that's dog friendly. If something cheaper is actually better, that would be nice.
I have a hardwood floor that looks like a gym floor. It is maple. I would like to stain it darker, however I've been told that staining this maple floor won't work and won't turn out?
Buff or sand a wood floor
A contractor told me that my floors would benefit from having a buff and refinish rather than a full refinishing. Is it legitimate to take a wood floor that was refinished 7 year ago, and treat it in this way, or would it be a wiser use of money to…
