Q: We are having floor finish problems; we just had our wood floors refinished and although the contractor followed protocol, a crackle appearance is evident over the majority of the area refinished.
A: It sounds like alligatoring. I call it wrinkling. This happens if the first coat is not dry enough before the next one is applied. The solvent etches into the first coating and causes the wrinkled appearance. All indications may have said to the contractor that it was dry. I’ve had that happen to me too a couple of times. Give it an extra day to dry if need be (unless this floor is over concrete or a cold space, in which case it may need a couple of weeks to dry enough to coat.) buff it down well with polisher and screen and coat again.

Glue stuck on hardwood floor
I just stained pine hardwood floors, and didn't get all the glue cleaned up. It looks horrible. How do I remove the glue before I put the finishing coats on? I tried sanding, but it didn't work.
Recommended hardwood floor retailers
Q: I've heard that some hardwood floor retailers with large discounts have floor products that may not be the same size on each end, which can create installation problems for contractors. What are the preferred retailers contractors usually order oak hardwood from? I'm reluctant to make a purchase on line…
Wave pattern throughout refinished hardwood floor
Q: Thanks for allowing us to write questions to you. I just had hardwood floors installed in 3 rooms of my home, and asked them to resurface the kitchen and hallway which already had hardwood. After 3 days, I entered the home to find that there was a wave pattern…
Pneumatic hardwood floor nailer leaving marks
My pneumatic hardwood floor nailer sometimes leaves unsightly marks my prefinished hardwood when I am nailing it. Is there something I should put over the plate on the nailer that will prevent it from marking the hardwood?
