Is it red or white oak?

Q: I have bought a home with hardwoods in 90% of the home. I need to add hardwood flooring that matches as closely as possible in one room. However, I’m not sure if it’s red or white oak.

With the stained floor, it’s hard for me to judge which wood is currently installed. Any suggestions?

A: If the grain has what I call tiger stripes, rather than heavy grain, then it is quarter sawn white oak. White oak also can tend to show a slight green cast to the colour. Tough to know for sure when stain is involved.
