Q: My father-in-law is installing hardwood floors in his condo. There is currently no sub floor underneath the carpet. Do you recommend installing a sub floor on top of the concrete or can the hardwood be installed with no sub floor?
A: If this is solid wood, you will need a wooden sub structure to nail into. I would not recommend just gluing down, for example, a 3/4 thick solid wood floor. I think a better way to go is to install either an engineered floor such as that offered by Mirage. This is a glue down installation. Or, go with an engineered Torly’s product which clicks together. www.mirage.com, www.torlys.com.
