Can I paint over pre painted quarter round, to match the existing baseboards?
My wife and I just bought a house in OR. It’s about 30 years old. The house is carpeted now. Can we be sure there is hardwood underneath the carpet? What else could the floor be? How would we know besides seeing it for ourselves?
My existing wood floor has no subfloor. To me the floor does not feel very solid. Is there anything I can do to improve my floor?
I do woodworking. I want to know the best way to remove a hardwood floor coating that has tungsten in it. Some people I have talked to said they use a planner. Is this a good idea or is there a better way?
I really dislike the plank laminate my spouse put down while I was away! It isn’t as shiny as I’d like, and the grooves are horrible dust collectors. I not only have them along the lengths of the planks, but at irregular 18″ lengths, too. I wonder what would happen if I put a water-based urethane all over it to seal the groves, and make it shiny? I know “everyone” says it wouldn’t work, but what would happen?
I have a client that wants a nail down floor (5 inch cherry). but also wants a sound barrier. From reading through your site, most of the suggestions involve floating or glue down floors. I was wondering if you have any suggestions in regards to nail down floors?
I’m refinishing my son’s room and am wondering about cork. With multiple allergies, I’m concerned about the binder (is it a gluten based binder?) and the finish.
I am a reporter for a Canadian TV network. I have read a press release re “Real Wood Floors: Look Beyond the Ordinary” from Canada Newswire, the release was sent by National Wood Flooring Association. I am very interested in making a feature story on the new flooring trend stated in the press release. We are most interested in reclaimed wood floors, hand scraped distressed floors and customization trends like borders, medallions, inlays and mixed media (stone, granite and even leather), etc… Do you have any referrals for me?
I am interested in laying wood floors in my new condo, which is located on the second floor. I heard of a resident being sued doing this because the new wood floors amplified the sound to the resident below. What can I do to prevent this from happening to me?
Our new room addition is not level to the existing house at both doorways, which join the two. One side is lower than the existing house, and the floorer added wedges to build it up to meet the house. They have now loosened (after 1 month), and the floorers are returning to repair it.
We just installed N**** Floor Planks and parquet in our basement. We stained the wood and put dead flat finish as topcoat. It was 99% done, when some hairline cracks appeared, there were around 10 at first, but as the days progressed it multiplied. We sanded those parts and re-applied the top coat, but a day later, the cracks resurface and expanded? Is there a remedy? I am based in the Philippines.
I am planning to get either hardwood or laminate floors in my townhouse. On the stairs from the foyer up to the first floor, and on the first floor (approximately 200 square feet). What I was wondering is: do I have to completely remove all my furniture from the first floor before I have the floors installed? There is a kitchen with ceramic tiles, which I have not decided if I will get done or not. Obviously the smaller furniture (bookcases, small chair, small tables, etc.) I can move, but I also have a larger TV, a larger chair, and a heavy queen size sofa bed. Would this all have to be moved out?
My upper level floor is my main level ceiling (craftsman style home). I did it wrong, and I have already finished the ceilings of the main floor. How can I finish the upper level floor without the finish dripping down on the main level ceilings? Can I completely seal the upper floor in any way, so that any spills from above will not drip to below?
We have 8 wooden chairs with rush seating. They were left on a covered porch in the rain and a serious mildew(ing) occurred. I have cleared the problem with a 15% bleach/85% water solution and they are looking very good. My next move will be to soak them with a mildew-resistant sealer, but first I would like to apply some type of conditioner/moisturizer. Do you have any suggestions? The actual rush seems to be a natural fabric. Someone suggested using tongue oil as the conditioner before the sealer is applied. What do you think?
I have 3-4-5 inch wide Red Oak floors installed over radiant heat. Each year when the heat is turned on the boards shrink and gaps between the boards develop. I am planing on refinishing the floors. How can I get ride of the seasonal gaps? Will Timber Mate work as a solution for my problem? I would like to finish the floors with gloss finish.
I am thinking of putting hardwood on the entire second floor of my house. Should I be concerned about the weight of either the solid or engineered floor? Will this cause problem to the structure of my house?
I’m looking to sand and refinish a portion of wood flooring in a large commercial office space. The space is comprised of hallways and transitions into offices, etc. I’m hoping that we can successfully only sand, refinish to match and then only urethane this repaired area to blend with the rest of the office floor. Any experience or comments on this attempt to blend urethane into the unaffected areas? The blended areas will be at transition areas of hallways where the hallway turns a corner and at doorways. The stain will match OK but it is the blending of urethane I am interested in your thoughts on. Otherwise, it’s more costly and it would cause quite an interruption in work to urethane the entire office.
I am looking for a charcoal/titanium laminate floor color. Please let me know if you have anything like this and we will discuss options later.
My entire home is hardwood. On the first floor the floors are in poor shape due to all the traffic over the years, but this doesn’t concern me too much. My main concern is that my house is over 100 years old and mostly every floor is sagging and not level. Is there a way to shore them and re-level them from the cellar before we refinish them?
