Small bumps in poly

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: After 3 coats of poly I still have a lot of imperfections. When I run my hand over it I feel small bumps. Is this normal? Is there a solution? A: Run your finish through a strainer to make sure it is clean and free of debris. Make sure the applicator is clean. The [...]

Ripple and poly peeling

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: We put in American Cherry hard wood floors. The floor people sanded and did two coats of oil poly. We felt it wasn’t enough and wanted another coat. They weren’t available, so we hired another person. They have put on two coats on top of the other two. There is one line of ripple [...]

Pock marks in the finish

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: I just recently had a hardwood floor refinished. The final coat is glossy, but it looks like there are pock marks in the finish. It’s not air bubbles, and I’m not really sure how to explain it. Is there anyway to smooth out the final coat such as buffing, without having to re-sand? A: [...]

Q: Thanks for providing us with this service. You have some very good tips and information in your website. We just refinished our bedroom wood floor. Once the project was done we noticed some dropping spots in certain areas from the lambswool that we used. We put two coats of finish (poly). Can we apply [...]

“Lumps” in the poly

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: I had my floors refinished, but they left lumps in the poly and I cannot get them to fix it. What can I do? Screen and polish? A: Are these lumps ‘debris’ or pimples? If they are pimples and there aren’t a lot of them, you could try to compress them with a roller [...]

Floor sheen from room-to-room looking quite different

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: We are currently in our refinishing stage and having issues with the water-based polyurethane. We used a low sheen poly, but floors from room-to-room are looking quite different. One is very shiny and another quite dull. We can’t think of any variations in the previous steps, so we have no clue what is going [...]

Coating is peeling off

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

We have wood floors that were installed 5 or 6 years ago. I had them recently recoated and the coating is peeling off. The flooring company advised that cleaning products such as Murphy’s Oil Soap (which I used on my floors) will penetrate the finished wood in scratches and deep grooves and cause the re-coating product not to adhere. I was advised that I should never use Murphy’s on my wood floors. I am trying to verify if this is correct, in your experience.

Whitish patches of “lifting” polyurethane

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I am just applying the second topcoat of an oil based clear polyurethane. The first coat had just over 12 hours drying time. There are slightly whitish patches of lifting polyurethane appearing from where I’ve gone over the first coat. They were not apparent prior to applying the second coat. It was well sanded and clean.

Newly finished floor feels rough

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

My newly installed hardwood floors feel rough when you wipe your hand across them. Our contractor said he doesn’t know of too many people who sit on the floor so it shouldn’t be a problem. It feels this way after 4 coats of polyurethane. Is this the way it should feel?

Did my dog cause finish to peel off?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

I have brand new hardwood floors (we have been in our new house 3 months). There are areas of my floor where the polyurethane is flaking off. The contractor has blamed this on my 11 year old 60 lb. lab. I fully expected scratches but not flaking and peeling of poly.

Finish peeled off floor, in strips

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Well, despite his care, within about two weeks of putting the final coat on, it started yellowing. We decided to let it go. About 5 months later we noticed that the finish was starting to peel. We can peel large and long strips of finish from the floor. Needless to say we are very disapointed with the product.

Ripples and bare spots and bubbles

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

I’m extremely unhappy with the outcome. My floors now look like a pond on a windy day, with ripples and bare spots and bubbles. The guy claims the previous owners must have washed them with an oil/soap and the poly did not adhere to the surface.
