Coating is peeling off

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

We have wood floors that were installed 5 or 6 years ago. I had them recently recoated and the coating is peeling off. The flooring company advised that cleaning products such as Murphy’s Oil Soap (which I used on my floors) will penetrate the finished wood in scratches and deep grooves and cause the re-coating product not to adhere. I was advised that I should never use Murphy’s on my wood floors. I am trying to verify if this is correct, in your experience.

Whitish patches of “lifting” polyurethane

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I am just applying the second topcoat of an oil based clear polyurethane. The first coat had just over 12 hours drying time. There are slightly whitish patches of lifting polyurethane appearing from where I’ve gone over the first coat. They were not apparent prior to applying the second coat. It was well sanded and clean.

Lost luster

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

In 2001, I refinished my hardwood floors. I used Mini Wax stain and Mini Wax Super Fast Drying Polyurethane for Floors products. I put on 3 coats of the Polyurethane. My wood floors have now lost its luster. There are also a few spots where there looks like there are green bubbles. How can I bring back the luster? Do I need to refinish again?

Newly finished floor feels rough

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

My newly installed hardwood floors feel rough when you wipe your hand across them. Our contractor said he doesn’t know of too many people who sit on the floor so it shouldn’t be a problem. It feels this way after 4 coats of polyurethane. Is this the way it should feel?

Best way to refinish?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

I just removed carpeting from my new home that is 44 years old. The carpet installer went nuts with the staples and some adhesive. All staples have been removed and the adhesive cleaned as best as I could. The floor seems to be in good condition but I would like to know the best way to refinish them if you will. What is the best way to fill in the many ‘holes’ from the staples, the best way to remove all of the adhesive and the best way to finish? What would you recommend that I, a beginner on floor maintenance, take on myself and/or hire the professionals to take care of?

Is grain filler required?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Is it required that I apply Grain Filler to my wood floors before finishing them? I used sanding sealer on a test piece, lightly sanded to knock down the grain, and sealed with two coats of Oil-based Polyurethane. The majority of the wood is shiny and smooth, but I can still see the grain in the finish. Is this normal/acceptable, or do I need the Grain filler?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

I have brand new hardwood floors (we have been in our new house 3 months). There are areas of my floor where the polyurethane is flaking off. The contractor has blamed this on my 11 year old 60 lb. lab. I fully expected scratches but not flaking and peeling of poly.

Finish peeled off floor, in strips

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Well, despite his care, within about two weeks of putting the final coat on, it started yellowing. We decided to let it go. About 5 months later we noticed that the finish was starting to peel. We can peel large and long strips of finish from the floor. Needless to say we are very disapointed with the product.
