Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: We just recently bought a new house that has hardwoods throughout. In one of our rooms we noticed a split/crack in one of the boards. Can we replace that piece or repair it in some way? It seems like it could get worse, like someone could catch their socks on it. Any suggestions? A: [...]

Wood planks pop when you walk on them

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: My house is almost two years old, concrete slab, wood floor B****-Manufacturer (glued down). There is a section of my living room where the wood planks pop when you walk on them. All the pops seem to be in a line (where the concrete floor had a small crack due to settling). How do [...]

Gouges, scratches and indentations over 80% of our NEW floor

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: We had a Kempas hardwood floor installed 12/07 in our new home. When the finish people were in our home afterwards it was damaged by them dragging an air compressor, dropping a nail gun, and by painters dragging their ladders across the floor. Needless to say we are very upset. The builder never covered [...]

Glue (polyurethane adhesive?) got on the floors

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: Our contractor installed new hardwood floors with glue. Unfortunately, the glue got on the floors. How do we remove it without damaging the urethane finish? A: He probably used a polyurethane adhesive such as Bostik’s Best. They actually have an adhesive remover that works quite well. Don’t let it spill between the boards. http://www.bostik-us.com/products/index.asp?fa=subCategoryPages&divisionId=2&categoryId=2&subCategoryId=49&subCategoryPageId=37

How to fix small, button sized dents

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: The server fell over and left a few little dents about the size of a small button on our hardwood floor. How can we fix it? A: You could try wetting the spot and applying heat over a towel from an iron, but I honestly don’t think this technique can work with floor finish [...]

Floor camel-backing

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: I have a lot of lift on my floor. I think it’s called camel-backing; like, the floor is a little hilly in some spots as if the staples have come out and now the floor is lifting. What is the cause? How do I fix it? A: Is this something that has just developed? [...]

What causes cracking in wood boards

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: What will cause cracking in the wood board ends and the centre of the boards 6 months after installation? A: What species of wood is it? Some very hard exotics seem prone to splitting. Likewise, sometimes a piece of oak can have a crack in it but not be noticed during installation; it can [...]

Q: I recently had new hardwood floors installed. Now some of the boards are cracking. A: The boards probably had the cracks when installed, but now with environmental changes they are opening up. They may have to be removed and replaced.

Cupping caused by off/on air conditioner?

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Could it (cupping) be caused by not running the air conditioner and the moisture builds up and falls to floor when air conditioner is then turned on? I also read that a new home contains about 500 gallons of water from all the new materials to construct the home.

Fixing up an old floor

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I recently just bought a house that was build in the 1930′s and has solid oak floors. In the living room it’s very dull. I don’t know if it’s because it was cleaned with ammonias or because it has a build up of oil, or some sort of residue. Also there’s wood floors in the kitchen that have been painted and have peel ‘n stick tile over them. After removing the tile, should I strip the paint off myself? If so, What should I use to strip the paint? Or should I hire a professional?
