How can I fill the many large nail holes on each of our hardwood steps?

Pine with dogs

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

We recently purchased a home with wide pine flooring. We love the look, but we also have 2 dogs and their nails have gouged and taken off the finish in certain areas. What can we do to repair these areas and how can we protect the floors from further damage?

Different species, different filler

Friday, November 18th, 2005

We have probably 25 different species of woods from osage, mahogany, cherry, white and red oak, birch, honey locust, ironwood.. To find a wood filler to match all these, yikes. That’s why I don’t think it would look good. Is there some product that we can “pour” into the gaps, cracks and knot holes to fill all these in? I’ve heard to leave the sawdust in the cracks and crevices, but won’t that come out during the first coat of sealer? We’re not using a stain either, don’t want to cover up any of the colors.

Nail holes

Monday, November 14th, 2005

Should I be able to see nail holes in my new wood floor? Also they tell me there is no good way to transition to my existing tile entryway because it sits slightly lower. Is this true?

Dark ring

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

I left a bucket with clothes cleaning solution on our maple floor. Now there is a dark ring on the floor. How do I get it out?

Scuff marks

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

Do you have any tips for removing scuff marks? They seem to be only on the surface of the floor, i.e. not into the wood itself.

Wood floors in a Kennel = dog scratch blues

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

A few people have told me that they think this might be white oak….I don’t know that for sure. My dog has been running around on the unfinished floor for weeks now (as a test) and only in the sunlight do I see nail marks from his paws. Here’s the questions: I have seen floors sanded and polyurethaned and then the dog gets yelled at all the time for running and scratching the floor up. I don’t want to go through that I don’t want to have to keep sanding and reapplying polyurethane on the floors every year either. What’s a gal to do??? A man at the Home Depot here suggested that I clean the floor really well and just apply turpentine on the bare wood as a natural sealer. Please advise me. I have to complete this task soon and I want to do it right the first time. I’ve seen your Q and A list and those people are kicking themselves for their hard work gone bad. I don’t want to go through that. When I am done with the floor, I will restore the baseboards.

Dark rings on floor

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

My boyfriend left a set of tires (don’t ask!) on his hardwood floor. There are now dark rings on the floor that will not come off with regular cleaning. Do you have a suggestion on how to get rid of these marks?

Large dogs scratched finish

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

We have 2 large golden retrievers who have scratched the polyurethane finish on our hardwood floors. Should we sand all the way down or just part way? What is the hardest finish to use to minimize future damage?

Swirls with an orbital sander

Monday, August 15th, 2005

A contractor told me that an orbital sander will leave swirls in a
125 year old wide plank pine floor, and that the floor needed to be
hand sanded. Is this in your experience?

Dime-sized hole

What is the best way to repair a dime-sized hole (cable wire size) that was drilled into the floor?

Nail holes and scratches

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I recently pulled the old carpet off from our stairs and pulled off all of the carpet tack strips that were on the treads and risers only to find lots of nail holes and scratches!! What is the best way to fix this problem to make them look like the rest of the oak hardwood in our house?

Scratches on one floor, wax on another

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I have 2 questions. 1st) The hardwood floors in my home are 37 years old. The downstairs have been sanded and refinished with 3 coats of poly urethane. They are now starting to show some scratches. How do I remedy? 2nd) The upstairs have never had anything done to them, except waxed about 20 years ago. They are in need of some work but not enough to sand and refinish. What do you recommend?

Repair a hole

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

We just finished installing a 3/4″ solid , pre-finished hardwood floor in our bedroom. While installing a phone cord, we drilled a hole from under the house right through our newly laid floor. Is there a way to repair the hole without taking out the entire board?

Glossy wood floors scuffed

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

We have dark mahogany high gloss floors. Beautiful. We’ve been careful with them for two years, but now a worker has dragged a piece of furniture and scuffed the gloss. About 1/2 inch wide and 10 ft. long. Light scratch. It looks like it only got the polyurethane. Can I go over just that scuff with a small brush and more poly? If not what can I use?

High heel dents

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

My son had a party in his new home. His wood floors got scratched and dented by high heels in some areas. Is there an easy way to fix this? Would heat from a hair dryer lift the wood?

Gouge in floor

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I lifted up the doormat to vacuum clean any dust and grit underneath to find a three inch damage, looks like someone’s heels have been dragged across it and took a shaving off the solid oak floor, we are not sure if it was there already or our fault, but how do you repair damage like that without having to replace the whole board/floor?

Dented the wood flooring

Friday, July 29th, 2005

While working at a customers home, a tool fell down the stairs and dented the wood flooring. What steps should be taken to fix it?
