Maple and dogs

Monday, May 8th, 2006

We’re currently building a house and am having 3” wide maple hardwood put in. Our concern is we have a large German Shepard and Jack Russel. We’d like to plan ahead and try to avoid the fate of some other folks asking questions. What is the best coating we should put on our hardwood prior to moving in to protect from the unsightly doggie scratches?

Nails in floor

Monday, May 1st, 2006

I ripped up the carpet and want to refinish the oak floors. I’ve spent 12 hours pulling staples out and am stumped what to do about the nails. There are all kinds of nails in the floor, some I pulled out, all different lengths but with the rest (and I mean about 40) all I am managing to do it damage the floor or pull the nail heads off. Is there a better tool to use - I’m using a hammer, pliers, and a thing that looks like a flat head screwdriver with a slit in it. If I start hammering them down with a nail set I’m going to have an awful lot of ugly putty spots right in the middle of the floor. I was hoping to save some money doing the floors myself, I just want them to look ‘good’ but every professional I contact wants to replace every board with the slightest imperfection and make them look stunning! It’s an old house, I don’t want to pay for brand new looking floors.

Fill in the lines

Friday, April 7th, 2006

We are moving soon and would like to repair any scratches we might have left in the wood floors in our apartment. The floors were not in good shape when we arrived and moving furniture improperly has made them worse. I don’t want to do anything too difficult as I am not a professional and I don’t want to spend the money. However I do like the landlord and would hate to leave them in their current condition w/o trying to help. Do you have any suggestions that would make them look nice? I can’t remove any boards or sand and polish. Would the wood putty or fillers work?

Shoe scuff marks

Friday, April 7th, 2006

We just installed a very expensive hardwood floor (alomediam Brazilian wood-dark wood) and after two coats of varnish, I can see shoe scarf marks. What is the strongest varnish or finish that can used of this type of wood so as to prevent any scratch marks?

Circular marks on diy sanded floor

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

We used a sander after we installed our brand new hard wood floor. After the stain was applied and dried, it now shows a circular marker from the sander. Now that the stain is on and 2 coats of the water based finish, is there any way to fix the marks so they won’t show?

Dent

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

I have recently put bamboo flooring in my living room. I accidentally dragged something across the floor that made a dent about ¼ wide, and not very deep,(only enough to see). Is there anything you can recommend to bring it up?

Removing marks

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

We recently had engineered wood floors installed and one of our wood-painted chairs has scuffed the floor with the paint from the chair (white paint on oak wood), do you know of a product we can use to remove this?

Pin holes

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

When a flooring company finished our Brazilian Walnut floors, they used a sandable wood filler in the hairline cracks that had appeared between the planks when the wood shrunk somewhat after installation. They filled the cracks several times with a sandable wood filler but after each sanding, some of the filler came out. After 3 coats of urethane we were left with thousands of pinholes which the urethane made really noticeable. It looked so bad, we had a second floor company start over. They sanded back to the bare wood, after another 3 weeks and 4 more coats of urethane we are left with the same problem. Each coat of urethane built up higher around the holes and made them stand out. We have lost weeks of construction time and thousands of dollars to the floor re-finishers. It looks so awful, we are considering using the walnut as sub-flooring and laying a prefinished floor over it. Could we use a floor putty to somehow plug the holes and THEN have another coat urethane applied over top? My husband thinks one or possibly 2 coats of urethane would level out over the holes if they are filled first. If its worth a try, should the floors be burnished first, then filled with putty? The color putty jar says to apply a coat of oil based urethane over the putty so I assume the dull waxy film left around the fill hole won’t cause a problem with the urethane adhering? Or do you fill first then burnish or fill and clean with a solvent?

Surface scratches

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

My solid golden oak floor recently got scratched, a screw from a chair caused surface scratches, also some small gouges. How do I repair these areas without having to remove the boards? The scratches appear to be mostly in the factory varathane finish.

Nicks and scratches

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

We have pre-finished floors and they told us that the floors would never need to be (and couldn’t be) sanded and refinished. The floors are only about 6 months old but we have a few spots where things have been dropped and small nicks and chinks and scratches have been left. How can we fix these areas without damaging the rest of the floor or without making the damaged area worse?

Boot mark scuff

Friday, December 30th, 2005

We have a long boot mark scuff on our new hardwood floor. It’s on top of the poly. Should we just use a poly cleaner or do you recommend something else?

Heels on hardwood

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

We had a saleswoman come to our house with heeled boots with an exposed tack. We now have over 500 1/4 inch round divots about 1/16 inch deep. The floors were recently refinished! Is there anything I can do about this, or is refinish all I can do?

Wood fillers

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

How can I fill the many large nail holes on each of our hardwood steps?

Pine with dogs

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

We recently purchased a home with wide pine flooring. We love the look, but we also have 2 dogs and their nails have gouged and taken off the finish in certain areas. What can we do to repair these areas and how can we protect the floors from further damage?

Different species, different filler

Friday, November 18th, 2005

We have probably 25 different species of woods from osage, mahogany, cherry, white and red oak, birch, honey locust, ironwood.. To find a wood filler to match all these, yikes. That’s why I don’t think it would look good. Is there some product that we can “pour” into the gaps, cracks and knot holes to fill all these in? I’ve heard to leave the sawdust in the cracks and crevices, but won’t that come out during the first coat of sealer? We’re not using a stain either, don’t want to cover up any of the colors.

Nail holes

Monday, November 14th, 2005

Should I be able to see nail holes in my new wood floor? Also they tell me there is no good way to transition to my existing tile entryway because it sits slightly lower. Is this true?
