Is their a product that will remove the glue and make this job a bit easier? The flooring is about a 13/8 inch thick, if that helps.

Nicks and scratches

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

We have pre-finished floors and they told us that the floors would never need to be (and couldn’t be) sanded and refinished. The floors are only about 6 months old but we have a few spots where things have been dropped and small nicks and chinks and scratches have been left. How can we fix these areas without damaging the rest of the floor or without making the damaged area worse?

Floors and wheelchairs

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

My son is in a power wheelchair. To get to his room he needs to cross the den and I would like to replace it with wood. I’m understanding that the laminating would be easier to keep from getting damaged. Please let me know if a laminated one would work better than a hardwood one. It will get a lot of wear and tear.

Measure twice, cut once

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

I installed a floating laminate floor, but my calculations were a little off. I now have a 1 1/2 inch to 1 3/4 inch gap after putting in my last row. Is there trim that can go around that? Currently, the room has a 2 inch baseboard around the house.

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005

I am installing a bamboo floor that is 5/8″ thick. I cannot find any place near me that rents an air powered flooring nailer (or shims to adjust a 3/8″ or 3/4″ ) to accommodate 5/8″ thick flooring. How should I install it? Pre-drill and use a hammer and nail set? Other options please?

Thursday, September 1st, 2005

Best hardwood for houses with large dogs

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

We want to replace our carpeted floors with hardwood floors. We have two large dogs and two cats. Which type of flooring would be best with this many pets? Thanks in advance for your help! We want to make sure that whatever floor we choose (hardwood, engineered, laminate) will withstand many pet feet and the occasional pet stain without becoming too scratched, dingy or stained.

Gap around perimeter of laminate floor

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I have some uneven gaps around the perimeter of my laminate flooring which I am installing myself. In some places, they are as big as 10 mm. Can I cover them with Quarter rounds?
Also, about the underlayment, should the underlayment run under the baseboards or should it be just under the laminates? Is it OK if some area along the perimeter (say about 5 mm) does not have an underlayment?

I’m also concerned about water damage. At this point I have requested ceramic tile in the kitchen but really want hardwood. The hang ups I have are durability and water damage???….. Help! What’s your opinion?

Pet stains and hardwood flooring

Friday, July 29th, 2005

My husband and I are considering laying parquet flooring in our living room and removing the carpet b/c our dog cannot seem to stop staining the carpet. We feel hardwood would be better but after reading your website I see that pet stains are a problem with hardwood. Is there a way that we can protect the wood after it is laid to prevent the urine from soaking into the wood in case we do not find it quickly?
