Searching for Canadian walnut

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Hello, I am looking for 150-170 sq. ft. of the Canadian walnut we ran out of upon installation. It is dark chocolate in color, tavern grade- many short pcs. and knots. (the knots are not filled, which is what I prefer). It has an aluminum oxide semi-gloss finish, and is standard width and thickness. The grain is soft, compared to American walnut flooring. If you can please help me with this, or recommend another company that I could contact, please let me know. I cannot find anything like this in Illinois. I would be very interested in samples if you have something that might work. Please reply.

Streaks on #2 common red oak

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

About 3 months ago I had a #2 common red oak floor sanded, stained with natural (same color that was originally used) and refinished with 3 coats of Swedish finish. Now there are many uneven dark (nearly black) lines that are unattractive. It may be my imagination but it appears to be getting more dark streaks every day. Was something improperly done with the staining or refinishing of the floor?

What type of hardwood to purchase

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I am trying to decide on what type of hardwood to purchase. In a previous home I installed dark cherry-stained oak. I have a dog and of course the scratches were very visible and after only a few months looked terrible. I also found it very hard to keep clean.

Beech on the hardness table

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

We are remodelling our kitchen and considering putting a Beech floor down. Is this a good wood for wear and tear? We have two grandchildren and they tend to play in the kitchen. Will the beech show all the dents and scratches easily? What would be the best wood to use? The flooring person said that beech is just as hard as red oak- Is this true?

Maple floors and dogs

Friday, May 12th, 2006

We’re currently building a house and am having 3” wide maple hardwood put in. Our concern is we have a large German Shepard and Jack Russel. We’d like to plan ahead and try to avoid the fate of some other folks asking questions. What is the best coating we should put on our hardwood prior to moving in to protect from the unsightly doggie scratches?

Picking species to compliment oak cabinets

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Our casual style home was built in 2000 and has light golden coloured oak cabinets. We want to install engineered wood flooring, but are confused as to what type of wood to use that would compliment our existing oak cabinetry, rather than match it with another like oak wood. I am drawn to warm reddish tones like Brazilian Cherry, Merbau, and Mahogany, however, I am afraid these might be too contrasting.

Painted pine under carpet with no subfloor

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

My house is approximately 80 years old. I just pulled up the old carpeting in the living and dining rooms and have an unfinished hardwood floor (probably pine) underneath that is coated with a thick layer of white construction paint and no subfloor. I have relatively easy access from the basement to the underside of the floor. Do I have to tear up the floor, put down plywood and re-install? The kitchen has linoleum over the wood that I wasn’t planning to get rid of.

American Cherry in a high traffic kitchen

Would American Cherry hold up in a high traffic kitchen area? Would this be a good choice?
