Is it OK to install new hardwood flooring over an existing hardwood floor?

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: Is it OK to install new hardwood flooring over an existing oak hardwood floor? A: The National Wood Flooring Association would say it is ok provided all the boards are stable and secure. Personally, I’d suggest ripping it out and laying 3/8 spruce plywood.

Transitional strip to join carpet and laminate on concrete

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: What kind of transitional strip do you use to join carpet and laminated flooring on concrete? A: Probably what is called a T cap, flat cap or dome cap. I would contact the manufacturer of the laminate or the store where you purchased it to get the appropriate strip.

Standard transition materials are not fitting

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Q: After installing laminate flooring in a living room and bedroom, we realized the standard transition materials are not fitting in the oversized gap. What can we do to fix this problem? A: It reminds me of the old saying ‘measure twice, cut once’. At this point, I think you will have to find someone [...]

Is it okay to lay hardwood in new homes?

Q: My husband and I purchased a new home in NL last September. Not long after we moved in we noticed splits and gaps in some of the hardwood flooring. It took a long time for us (about 5 months) to finally get the company who sold and installed the flooring to come look at [...]

I was using a Bostitch floor nailer, I misplaced it twice and buried a staple in the top of a floor board.

Glue on back of salvaged wood

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

I have removed some oak flooring from a renovation job in a house and plan on installing it in my house. I have removed all the nails from the back but there is some glue on the the back which is sometimes hard and sometimes brittle. What is the best method for removing this? This leads to my next question. What is the the best way to re-install the oak strips (type of nails, glues etc.)?

A depression where the grain shows

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

We just had our oak hardwood floor refinished and are not happy with the finish. It looks like the polyurethane is uneven. You can especially notice it when squatting down and looking forward. Wherever the grain of the wood is showing it looks like there is a bit of a depression.

Nail the new floor over the old floor?

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

I have 2 1/4” wide birch hardwood floor and I would like to replace it with 3 1/4” oak hardwood. Can I nail the new floor over the old floor or would I have to remove it and nail down a 3/8” plywood sub floor?

Knocking down walls

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

We are knocking out walls between our livingroom, dining room and kitchen. The livingroom and kitchen are oak. The kitchen is Douglas Fir. Should we keep all and refinish them? How do we transition them? (It’s a long, straight shot from the front door to the back kitchen door.)

Particleboard subfloor

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I am planning to replace my carpets with hardwood. The subfloor is particleboard. I have heard that rather than installing a plywood subfloor (since it will increase the level of the floor) I can just re-secure the particleboard against the joists. Will this work? I understand that nails do not hold very well on particleboard, but what is the problem with this… will the floor squeak? Will it move?

Nails or staples for Brazilian walnut?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I am about to lay a Brazilian walnut 3/4′ floor and was wondering if flooring nails or staples are less likely to crack tongue when using air nailer. The flooring is extremely hard and I would like to avoid cracking.

Installing salvaged wood

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

I took out some old hardwood strip flooring from a renovation job and pulled out the nails from the back and plan on cutting out the damaged wood and re-installing the good wood in my home. I have put down a tongue and grove plywood subfloor and am wondering if finishing nails or using a glue would be the best way to install the old hardwood. It is not tongue and grove, it’s simply strips.

Grit built up in the tongue and groove of salvaged wood

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I recently bought about 1200 feet of 2 1/4 birch flooring that was ripped out of a gym. I plan on laying this in my new house. The only problem is that the flooring has a fair bit if grit built up around the tongue and groove area. I need to remove this grit before I lay the floor, so that it will fit tightly together. Do you know the quickest and easiest way to do that?

No long boards in batch

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

We recently purchased 1000 sq. ft of Brazilian teak 3.75 in wide, 3/4 in thick hardwood from J****** Premier. The boards were listed as being cut in random lengths. What we got was about 5 different lengths, ranging from 1 ft to the longest being 3 ft. We were expecting longer lengths. Is what we got standard for hardwood?

Removing glue from salvaged wood

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Can I leave some old glue on the bottom of the 3/4′ solid walnut T&G floors I salvaged and use a 1/4′ or thinner pad under to make up the difference, so they don’t have high spots?
