Dog claw scratches

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

We built a new home last year and installed S******* engineered wood floors throughout most of the downstairs. Even though we keep our dog’s claws clipped, we still have lots of scratches. The finish is aluminum oxide. I’ve tried the standard scratch repair kits (filler, crayon type fillers, etc.) and it does nothing. I’m trying to contact the manufacturer but do you have any ideas? Can the floors be sanded and refinished?

Species of wood that is best for dog owners?

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

I was considering putting wood flooring in my home, my question is: What type of wood flooring is best for dogs to walk on and not damage? I have a Bulldog to two German Shepards who all seem to nail-walk on the tile floors.

Floor cleaner made a mess

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I used a urethane maintenance coating for unwaxed floors. (A***** hardwood floor refinisher) It has made a horrible mess; peeling, flaking, etc. Can you help me with any suggestions of what I can do to remove it? Mineral spirits will remove it with lots of rubbing, but it would take me weeks of elbow grease to do by hand.

Dog friendly floors and coatings

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I just obtained some pre-finished samples to help me choose the species, color and finish of my new floor. I have a dog. I tried to see how resilient the flooring would be by scratching the samples with my thumbnail. None of the samples seem very resilient, but what really seems to scratch is the finish, not the wood, and this uses the aluminum oxide.

When should I move my furniture back

When should I move my furniture back on my newly stained hardwood floor?

Lost shine

Monday, December 11th, 2006

We just bought an old home and the hard wood floors have lost their shine. Is their an inexpensive method we can do to bring the shine back? Like a store bought wax or something?

Gaps

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

I did bring in a professional hardwood floor sander/refinisher to finish the floor. It was only after the sanding and two coats of oil-based urethane were applied that I noticed and became concerned about the gaps between hardwood strips. I obviously had not checked closely before the refinishing began, so my mistake. I can only guess that being in this part of the province during the heating season, the humidity level was so low that the hardwood shrank appreciably.

Tacky gym floor

Friday, December 1st, 2006

We have a gym floor that we refinish (oil based product) every year around Christmas. We are having troubles with it being very slick right now (basketball games and practice for a month and a half before we can re-finish). We have cleaned several times with a very fine scrubber (very low abrasive) but it really doesn’t help too much. We try cleaners that are not to leave a residue and also used wet towels on dry-mops. Nothing is working. My question is, is there a product that we could add to something that would restore the tackiness? It can actually be quite dangerous.

Log home decor

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

We have a log home, with log walls on the inside. We currently have carpeting, but want to change to either laminate or hardwood floors. We have 2 puppies and occasionally they have an accident. What would you suggest, and should we try to match the color of the flooring to the walls or have a contrast?

Sealers and what cleaner

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I bought a house with a hardwood floor. I need to know what type of cleaner I can use on it. How do I tell if it is sealed hardwood?

Wood floor popping when the furnace comes on

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I’m having a problem with my wood floor popping when the furnace comes on and run for 30 minutes or more. I am getting this very loud popping in the flooring, is that a natural occurrence when the weather out side changes or is that something I need too be concern about?

Cleaning up old floors

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

The oak hardwood floors in my home are 44 years old. If I remember that far back F****** was the finish on the floors. They have been covered off and on with carpeting. The only problem with the floors is dullness. I would like to bring up the shine. They have not been paste waxed and buffed in years. I only used SC Johnson’s One Step a few times. What product would be best for my old floors? Being a senior citizen, I’m not interested in redoing the floors.

Wavy appearance of floor boards

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

My hickory 4-inch-board floors were installed in December 2005 in a brand new home. The boards are not laying completely flat. They have like a wavy appearance and you can feel the waves with your hands. I noticed this probably a month or so after installation. I have been waiting, thinking they might flatten out in time. Also, I hear loud “cracking sounds” coming from the flooring from time to time. Could you tell me what caused this and if there is anything that can be done about it?

Historic floods and hardwood floors

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

We have a new wood floor installed in a new addition, over a newly built crawl space. The floor was installed during a very wet period of the summer (historic floods took place near that time). The floor was flat after finishing. We covered it with drop cloths for a few weeks while trim work was done. When we removed the drop cloths, the floors had cupped. There had also been a problem with drainage that the builder had fixed, but not before it flooded the new crawl space. Now we are stumped – the job is done, we are about to have it inspected, and the builder is saying to wait until winter for the floor to flatten out with the heat. What if it doesn’t? What if it still needs to be resanded and refinished? Whose responsibility is this? We are reluctant to move into the space before this issue is resolved, but how long can/should we wait?

Cats

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Will my cats nails scratch prefinished hardwood flooring? What about moist hair ball regurgitation? Would they harm the floor?

Humidity issue

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

How seriously do we need to take the humidity issue? (Of course, no-one told us about this when we were looking at hardwood as an option.) We mercifully don’t have a leaky condo. Do we really have to forgo fresh air?

Unfinished basement and moisture

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

I will be installing hardwood flooring next month. The flooring is going to be laid in my living and dining rooms. These rooms are located above my unfinished basement. Is moisture a concern? Should I use a vapour barrier underneath the new floor? According to your recommendations on your site you also suggest that 3/8 sheathing be installed on top of OSB / ply. If my OSB is installed on the length… Should the sheathing be installed the same way or on the width?

When can I put an area rug down on a newly installed hardwood floor?

When can I put an area rug down on a newly installed hardwood floor?

A spruce up of hardwood previously covered by carpet

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

We bought our house 20 years ago and it had carpet on the floors. We took the carpet up over 5 yr.. ago and noticed that it had hardwood floors, and no noticeable damage. Since we had already bought the carpet to put down, we put the new carpet down. Now we want to take the carpet up and use the hardwood floors. We do not have the finances to refinish the floors at this time but want to have it done in the next year or so. What should our next step be and what should we use to accomplish this?

Why are my wood floors sticky?

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Why are my wood floors sticky? I use warm water and no other cleaners, but lately I’ve noticed that my floors are kind of sticky, specially if the floor is exposed to a sunny area? help? the floors are only about 2 years old, birch, high gloss finish.
