Transition from oak top step to carpet

What is the best way to transition from oak top step to carpet? We are replacing the plywood treads with oak treads and repainting the risers. The top of our stairs ends in a hallway covered in
carpet.

Hiding cuts beside top of banister

We’re installing laminate flooring upstairs. How do we hide the cuts that are beside the top of the banister (the flat part that is about 5 inches wide and holds the spindles). We started putting the floor down at the wall and are finishing beside the bannister. Do we use a shoe molding? Thanks you for your help.

Knocking down walls

We are knocking out walls between our livingroom, dining room and kitchen. The livingroom and kitchen are oak. The kitchen is Douglas Fir. Should we keep all and refinish them? How do we transition them? (It’s a long, straight shot from the front door to the back kitchen door.)

Particleboard subfloor

I am planning to replace my carpets with hardwood. The subfloor is particleboard. I have heard that rather than installing a plywood subfloor (since it will increase the level of the floor) I can just re-secure the particleboard against the joists. Will this work? I understand that nails do not hold very well on particleboard, but what is the problem with this… will the floor squeak? Will it move?
