Gaps developing between some boards

I have hardwood installed throughout my home (maple 3 inch). Lately, I noticed some gaps between some boards. Maybe 1/8 inch or less. I have air exchanger installed. What could be the cause of these gaps? Our home is 1-1/2 years old.

The steps on my staircase are maple. I have already sanded them and I need to fill some holes and polyurethane them. What should I use?

Big white spots on DIY stained floor

We sanded and stained and polyurethaned old wood floors. There were really dark spots from old stains on some parts of the floor. We sanded them as much as we could. After we stained the floor, and put on the polyurethane, we now have big white spots on some parts of the floor.

Grit built up in the tongue and groove of salvaged wood

I recently bought about 1200 feet of 2 1/4 birch flooring that was ripped out of a gym. I plan on laying this in my new house. The only problem is that the flooring has a fair bit if grit built up around the tongue and groove area. I need to remove this grit before I lay the floor, so that it will fit tightly together. Do you know the quickest and easiest way to do that?

Clean up a room instead of sanding?
