Checking concrete floor for moisture

I just purchased a small 2 bedroom home that has carpeting over a concrete floor. We are at ground level and want to lay hardwood flooring. What actions do we need to take prior to the installation to steer clear of moisture damage? Do we just lay some sort of moisture barrier or do we have to lay plywood?

We are now ready to change the stairs and rails. What is the best way to match the floor? What stain and varnish are the best for this very busy area, and what method should I use to apply the products?

I need to replace two pieces of hardwood flooring, due to some damage. How much would it cost to do this? I have spare pieces of the wood already for the job. The pieces that need to be replaced are almost in the centre of the room.

Would a high speed burnisher get rid of marks?

I live in a historic building with hardwood floors that have been neglected, but still look pretty good. I would like to make the floors look good without investing a lot of time and money. I have access to floor buffer and high speed burnishers. Would a high speed burnisher get rid of light marks from shoes and moving furniture? Thanks for your assistance.

Grey and worn areas on floor

The heavy traffic areas of my floor are worn down and grey. Can I just clean-up and re-varnish those areas and blend them into the rest of the hardwood floor? I know it won’t be perfect, but will it be OK?
