Gap in tongue and groove flooring

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I have a tongue and groove, relatively inexpensive, hardwood floor in my kitchen. A 3/4″ gap has appeared between ends of two of the pieces. How can I address this?

Tung oil and pine floors

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I have recently looked at a pine floor in a new house and the home owner asked if I could put tung oil on the floor instead of poly. she told me that she had read it in a magazine, and that it said to wipe the tung oil on then wipe it off. Then, wait for a while and repeat it again. Three times. I told her that I have never done this before and that I would get some input on this matter and get back with her. Can you just put tung oil on a pine floor with out any protection on the top off the oil, and if so is this the correct procedure to do it?

3/8″ Thick floors

Friday, January 26th, 2007

My wife and I just bought a 1929 home. One of the bedrooms had carpet. We pulled the carpet and there are vinyl tiles glued to the hardwood floor. We began removal of the tiles but the glue is sticking to the hardwood floor beneath the vinyl. How do we remove the glued vinyl tiles without damaging the hardwood flooring underneath?

Snap-Off Screw Kit

Do the snap-off screws in kit # 30-0002 actually pull down and tighten the floorboard to the joist or simply keep the two components from touching?

Wood floors glued to black tar paper?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

My contractor just installed a hardwood floor everywhere in my house. He first used black tar paper on the concrete and paste/wood glue before putting down the hardwood floor. I just found out from another contractor that black tar paper is not suitable for hardwood and the wood would eventually come off unglue. Is that true? Am I heading towards another big project of gutting the wood floor, shaving off the tar paper and reinstalling wood flooring the right way? HELP!!

Types of finishes

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I have just finished installing my oak strip flooring and am looking into the types of finishes. So far it’s between Waterlox or Minwax Polyurethane. The thing is that I am looking for a finish that will allow my floor to keep its light, natural hue, rather then giving it a golden/tan/yellow coloring that would take effect with these types of finishes. What would you recommend as to using to allow my oak flooring to keep its natural, white color?

Polyurethane finish vs. an oil finish

Friday, January 26th, 2007

We are planning to lay down a Brazilian Walnut floor in a renovation. I’m wondering if you can compare the pros and cons of a polyurethane finish vs. an oil finish?

How to save the subflooring when removing hardwood?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I am removing oak hardwood floors in my ‘89 home that are glued down onto particle board subflooring. I will be replacing it with tile. There is about 300 sq. feet of hardwood flooring that needs to come up. I’ve been researching methods online with little success and what I have read makes it sound like a total nightmare. Will I be able to salvage my subflooring by carefully removing it with a prybar and hammer? Besides using my circular saw to cut small sections at a time for removal are there any other secrets to this inevitably painful project?

Swirl marks on refinished hardwood floor

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I just had my floors refinished due to a water damage. I have 3/4″ red oak. We went with a natural finish with semi-gloss finish. The floors look great, but I have one concern: one area in my floors, when the SUN hits this spot, I can see swirl marks. Is this finishing problem?

Wood floors drying out the air?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Our landlord just installed new oak floors in several rooms. They are beautiful. But ever since their installation, we have VERY dry air in the house and cannot get past the choking feeling in the air, despite running a humidifier as much as possible. How long will this last (it’s awful during this flu season)? Any recommendations to help the floor to “settle in”?

Ripping out linoleum

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I just took ugly laminate flooring off my kitchen floor. It still has two different linoleum’s that are glued down. I need two take it down to the wood. How do I do this, without destroying the wood? Do I use some kind of heat gun and scrape out with a scraper or am I out going to hurt the floor itself?

Old water mark

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I just bought an old house. I ripped up the worn-out carpet in the hall to find hardwood flooring underneath. It extends into the bedrooms. However, the hallway has an area of what appears to be water damage. It is stained, and the boards even seem to have changed in texture and seem to have shrunk some. Can that be sanded down, or will I need to replace those boards?

Paint primer spilled on floor

Friday, January 26th, 2007

We came home tonight to find that our dogs had spilled a gallon of paint primer on our hardwood floors- while we were able to get the wet paint off the floors using water: how can we get the splatter and the white residue that has settled into the grain off? Our floors are unfinished and were 1920’s cherry.

Bamboo gaps?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

About 3 months ago I had bamboo installed in my second story bedroom over a plywood subfloor. Unfortunately, after a month of being installed 6 gaps opened ranging in size.

Coats and fish eye bubbles

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I sanded my floors, then put 2-3 coats of poly on them. I decided I wanted another coat-that was done about a month ago… fish eye bubbles all over the place now! I don’t want to have to rent another sander (it’s a huge fuss in an apartment building). This is a very small floor space. A pro tried to get rid of them by putting another coat of poly on-a colleague of his told him this might or might not work-it didn’t! I would love to get rid of the fish eyes for once and all.

Install over top?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I just purchased pre-engineered oak planks to replace wood flooring already installed. The flooring I need to remove is a tongue and groove floor glued down to OSB sub floor. I can’t remove the glued floor without pieces of the osb coming up with it. What Should I do?

Moisture ratings

Friday, January 26th, 2007

The flooring as I understand it has a moisture rating of between 8-10. My heat designer said they recommend between 6-8. I have the new flooring laying on the radiant heat (in boxes) for about a week.

If by chance you know more about “Seaman Kent,” perhaps you own photos of the founders (family tree?), we’d be interested in seeing what you have! We’d love to have pictures of William Seaman and Frank Kent on this page!

Removing wood without ripping out kitchen?

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

My hardwood floors were installed under the kitchen cabinets and have not held up well. I would like to remove them, and install ceramic tiles. How do you remove the old flooring without tearing out the kitchen cabinets?
