Can you use tongue oil on wood and cover it with a polyurethane?
We have oak floors and we’re having them stained, however, the stain is very uneven in color. We are using a very dark wiping stain. It’s almost like you can see areas where the sander stopped and started. The floors have now been sanded out twice and re-stained twice. The second staining was even worse. There are a lot of “lite” blotchy areas throughout the floor. Some areas are dark (which we wanted) and some are light. The finisher does not use a vacuum. Does this matter?
I have 40 year old parquet in the basement of my back split that has lifted due to the weeping tiles overflowing during a recent rain storm. (In my neighbourhood the downspouts go down into the ground where the rain water is then taken directly to the storm sewer system. One of the underground pipes was blocked and the water backed up into my basement.)
I have just sanded doing the 36, 50, and 80 grit. I stained it as well. However, when I rolled the first coat of oil based polyurethane I got bubbles everywhere. Is there a way to get rid of the bubbles with out re-renting a buffer, etc.?
I just bought a 70 year-old house. I’ve looked at the hardwood floors and they don’t seem to be in too bad shape at all (there was carpet covering them). I want to bring them back to life. Do I need to sand them down or can I just throw a coat of varathane on them, or wax them?
We applied a water based polyurethane to our freshly stained floors. We have only done one coat with a roller. We have places where there was not enough polyurethane on the roller and places where you can tell it was stopped to reload the roller. Should we apply the second coat and see how it looks or buff the floor then reapply?
How do I find wax for hardwood floors? Which stores in the Toronto, Ontario region carry them? The last wax I used for my floors was Aerowax and they don’t seem to be in business anymore. I will take waxed floors over others any day.
Hello, I am looking for 150-170 sq. ft. of the Canadian walnut we ran out of upon installation. It is dark chocolate in color, tavern grade- many short pcs. and knots. (the knots are not filled, which is what I prefer). It has an aluminum oxide semi-gloss finish, and is standard width and thickness. The grain is soft, compared to American walnut flooring. If you can please help me with this, or recommend another company that I could contact, please let me know. I cannot find anything like this in Illinois. I would be very interested in samples if you have something that might work. Please reply.
I am looking at replacing my carpet covered stair treads with the oak slab treads. The existing treads are 1 1/2″ thick pine. Can I remove the treads and risers and replace with new? If I place the new treads on top of the existing ones the stair steps will not be the same highth on the top and bottom steps. Should I use a thinner, 1/2″ or 3/4″ thick tread with a 1″ lip? Also how difficult is it to remove the existing treads and risers? I am an experienced woodworker so I can make any type of tread I need to.
I just installed engineered Brazilian cherry throughout my 11-yr old house (5-1/4″ wide, 3/8″ thick). We are going thru our first Texan winter (close to freezing) and the floor is popping like chestnuts in an open fire. I got down on my knees and found hairline cracks developing on my floors. Did I just lose my floors?
When should I move my furniture back on my newly stained hardwood floor?
The laminate flooring we purchased was defective in the sense that there seems to be no finish coat on it. Residue, like the underside color, comes off on the tips of the kids shoes socks and any cloth used to clean it. The store did replace it (not from the same manufacturer). The problem we are having now is they would not install it. As it is to late in the year for us to do it ourselves, can a finish be put on it until we have time to install the new floor?
What is the best way to cover an existing staircase with wood? With hard wood or laminated?
We just bought an old home and the hard wood floors have lost their shine. Is their an inexpensive method we can do to bring the shine back? Like a store bought wax or something?
We have just recently bought a house dated somewhere around the early 1900’s, After removing the 10 year old carpet and the 40+ year old linoleum we discovered the original hardwood floors underneath. The linoleum seem to have been laid with some sort of tar or tar paper under them. Is there anyway to remove the tar or what ever it is on the floor without destroying the hardwood and what is the best thing to finish them with?
After having a large group of people over, someone must have had a nail coming out of their high heeled shoes and put deep round dents all throughout my kitchen floor. How (or can) this be repaired without replacing the entire floor? My house was just built three years ago and I can’t imagine having to replace the hardwood flooring.
We have a 3000 sq. foot hard wood dance floor (we think it’s oak, but not sure). We are looking at a minwax polyurethane water based clear finish. We are doing this job ourselves, sanding, sealing and finishing. We want to know which of their four options is the best for us to use; matt, satin, semi gloss or clear high glass. Please keep in mind we want to end up with the most durable, the best looking, the least slippery and the longest lasting finish. Please also keep in mind, this is a high traffic, commercial use dance floor used 7 days a week.
I am debating whether to just remove the varathane and re-wax, but don’t really want to have to re-wax each year. I was also considering maybe a tung oil finish. I have 3 big dogs that are in and out of the house all day long.
I am getting ready to install 3/4″ tongue and groove flooring in my kitchen where a remodel is being completed. The cabinets are staying so I am interested in how to secure the flooring that will be under their recessed toe kick area. There is not enough room to surface nail them or use a floor nailer. How will I accomplish this?
