Skin on wood floors and holes

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

The wood floor in the home I purchased is about 20 years old. There are multiple places where the wood has simply “collapsed” as though there were a thin top layer of wood with space underneath that caved in/broke through, holes following the grain from 1/16 x 2 to 1/2 x 3 inch in size, and in most cases definitely not from loosened knots. The floor appears to be quite an amateur job, and I wondered if it could be simply poor quality wood, or termites, or some other problem. I simply cannot imagine a solid wooden plank caving in!

Glue residue

How can I safely remove glue residue from my newly installed hardwood floor?

Spilt bathroom cleaner on wood floor

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

I spilled a bottle of bathroom cleaner on our engineered floors and it seems to have dulled it a lot. The shine is gone and you can notice a big difference from the rest of the floor. Is there anything that I can use that will make it shine again without having to refinish the whole floor?

Hundreds of holes

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

We removed carpet from our hardwood floors. The floors are in great shape, but there are hundreds of holes where the tac strip was removed as well as unfinished wood under the strip. How do we fill the holes and finish the edge to match the rest of the floor?

Choosing a floating floor

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

We have to put a floating wood floor on the 1st floor in our 1890 brick city house in Philadelphia. Upstairs we have beautiful cherry stained yellow pine floors with a polyurethane coat that has tons of character. Could you suggest a species of wood offered in floating floors that might work well with the character of our floor upstairs? And, I’m confused about the 1-3 strip choices when choosing a floating floor. Which do you think might work best for us? And lastly, for floating floors would you recommend Khars? Any others?

Not level

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

We just ripped out carpet from our hallway. We discovered the floors had been finished, but the floor is not level. Is there anyway to level the floor without ripping it out?

Putty or dowels?

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I’m installing new solid birch treads on my stairs. What is the best way of fastening them to the stringers? I am thinking glue and screw. Also, what is the best way to cover up the screw holes on my treads? Wood putty or wooden dowels?

Log home decor

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

We have a log home, with log walls on the inside. We currently have carpeting, but want to change to either laminate or hardwood floors. We have 2 puppies and occasionally they have an accident. What would you suggest, and should we try to match the color of the flooring to the walls or have a contrast?

Sealers and what cleaner

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I bought a house with a hardwood floor. I need to know what type of cleaner I can use on it. How do I tell if it is sealed hardwood?

Pee peels

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

My dog peed on our floor and we did not notice this until the next day. After cleaning up the mess, I noticed that the finish had lifted and peeled on one side of the wood slat. The wood in not discoloured but you can see where the finished has peeled. Can I try and apply polyurethane to that one spot or is it better to sand the whole slat and then apply polyurethane to the whole slat of wood?

Wood floor popping when the furnace comes on

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I’m having a problem with my wood floor popping when the furnace comes on and run for 30 minutes or more. I am getting this very loud popping in the flooring, is that a natural occurrence when the weather out side changes or is that something I need too be concern about?

Cleaning up old floors

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

The oak hardwood floors in my home are 44 years old. If I remember that far back F****** was the finish on the floors. They have been covered off and on with carpeting. The only problem with the floors is dullness. I would like to bring up the shine. They have not been paste waxed and buffed in years. I only used SC Johnson’s One Step a few times. What product would be best for my old floors? Being a senior citizen, I’m not interested in redoing the floors.

Silicone to seal floating laminate floor

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Should I use silicone to seal floating laminate floor during installation? I am getting ready to install a floating laminate wood flooring in our front entryway and living room this weekend. I have heard of people putting a thin bead of silicone on the top part of the tongues before inserting them into the next board’s groove in order to prevent any spilt water from leaking in between the boards. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not. It sounds good in case our cat were to knock over water while we were gone, but would it hinder the expanding/contracting of the floor over the years, or make it too difficult to replace a board if ever needed? Would it be necessary or worth it, and if so, what kind of sealant would you suggest?

Relay

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

My wife had 3/8″ ***** (cheaper) engineered hardwood installed in a bedroom, but it was laid with the joists, instead of across. I am now putting in the same product in another bedroom and hallway and will be laying it perpendicular. Can I remove and re-lay the before mentioned bedroom without ruining it? I think it was stapled.
