What type of hardwood to purchase

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I am trying to decide on what type of hardwood to purchase. In a previous home I installed dark cherry-stained oak. I have a dog and of course the scratches were very visible and after only a few months looked terrible. I also found it very hard to keep clean.

Oil finish?

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I have just selected “*********” hardwood flooring for my new condo. The hardwood flooring company has suggested it be finished with an oil, rather than urethane. What are the pros and cons of each? Which would you recommend?

Red vs. White Oak

What is the characteristic difference in red oak and white oak 3/4 tongue and groove hardwood flooring?

Floor stain all over painted walls

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

We just had the hardwood floors in our house refinished. After sanding the floors, the contractor applied the stain to the floors. However, we now have multiple stain spots on the walls (at different levels on the walls and not just at ground level) in those rooms. Is it expected that you will have stain on the walls and that you will have to repaint those walls after the contractor completes the refinishing job? Or, should the contractor have put up some sort of protective covering along the walls to protect the walls from splatter during the application of the stain to the floors? The contractor is telling us that having the splatter on the walls is expected and that we should have known that we would have to have the rooms repainted after he was done with the floors.

Manufacturers floor cleaner doesn’t work

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

I purchased what I thought was superior ********* ********** about 2.5 years ago. Since then I am totally dissatisfied with the flooring. I contacted ******** who sent out a 3rd. party rep. who assessed the condition of the flooring. His response is that it “was an inherent quality of the floors and there were no manufacturing defects.” My complaint is and has been the floor is marked-up and dull, the only time it looks good is when its wet and that is unfortunately briefly when I try unsuccessfully to clean it. When I’ve tried cleaning it with all ****** provided products, you can see footprints, handprints, pawprints and streaks. Anyway, I tried twice to get customer service by ********* to no avail and I’m stuck with a horrible floor in a large portion of my house. Can you recommend any way to try and clean this awful mess?

Restoring old carpet covered floors

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

My husband and I would like to remove the carpet in our living room and dinning room. When I had it professionally cleaned they said the carpet was about 50 years old. When we lifted a corner up there is a mesh over red clay like stuff. Where the clay was lose there are beautiful wood floors. We would like to remove the carpet without having to sand and refinish. Is there any thing we could use that won’t damage the floors?

Missed instructions for floor install

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

I have installed a hardwood floor over particle board (with tar paper between). I thought I had read enough instructions before beginning, but somehow I missed that I shouldn’t put the flooring over particle board. What problems can I expect? What are some solutions? I haven’t finished the floor (It’s all nailed in, but I haven’t sanded/sealed yet).

Product shelf life

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

We had a very reputable flooring firm refinish our hardwood floors. I routinely wiped the floors with their cleaner. They used their own products. However, we are devastated with the end result. They put two coats of ***** ***** on the floors; they look mottled like the wax isn’t adhering in some places. I noticed that there product containers were covered with thick dust like they had been stored a long time. I realize patent dates can change but the small date like 1/91 wasn’t a patent date but printed on the label. One had a patent date of 1987; could these outdated product possibly of caused this mottled look; it is in all areas of the flooring over 700 sq. ft. We had a large area rug and it looks the same in that area as the halls. I read online that there is a shelf life of like 2 years if unopened; it look like one container of shine had been opened; not quite full.
