Kitchen floor install

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I am wanting to install hardwood floors in my kitchen. My question is how this can be done with my dishwasher and trash compactor? How do you adjust for the height of the wood flooring to them. You can’t just install the wood up to them as you would not be able to get them out at a later date if needed. Any suggestions?

Sanding the glue off stairs

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I have a set of stairs that run along a wall and are open front and back (no risers) and each tread is wrapped in carpet. From what I can tell, these treads are 2 x 12 construction fir. My question is: If I pull the carpet off, can I sand the glue off and sand it smooth enough to be able to stain/polyurethane each tread?I was considering applying a Hardwood Laminate to each tread, top and bottom (since each are exposed to the eye), but was worried that there is not a stair nose wide enough to cover those dimensions (1 ½’ tread plus the thickness of laminate x 2). What would you suggest?

Seeping globs

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I just hired a local wood flooring company to refinish the entire first floor of my house this past April. Since that time the polyurethane has seeped out from between the boards and formed small globs or crystals of poly that are now stuck on the floor. Every room that was done shows evidence of this problem….

All short pieces in foyer

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

However, in the foyer area, there is a section (you can almost draw a circle around it) where very short pieces were used (1-2 feet each). It almost looks like they tried to use the ‘leftovers’ to fill in the section.

Uneven transition

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I have some snap and click hardwood floors. I’m putting the transitions in from floor to tile and floor to concrete. Which tools and what is the best way to do this? The cut from the hardwood to the tile is uneven so it makes a slight V shape. What’s the best way to cover this and make it flush?

Could improper nail down of the sub-flooring be a problem?

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

When I bounce up and down on the flooring by the threshold that was removed, you can see the sub-flooring move up and down about an 1/8″. Could improper nail down of the sub-flooring be a problem?

Hardwood flooring in front entrance?

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Is it wise to put good quality oak hardwood flooring in a front entrance ( 9′ x 7.5′) and up the 7 stairs to the main level? We have very expensive tile on the floors now and carpeting on the stairs and main floor. We were trying to keep some semblance of continuity by putting it all in hardwood. We use this entrance 95% of the time.

Home-made style fillers

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I am in New Orleans helping to rebuild this great city. I am encountering a lot of gaps in the floors I’m refinishing. I have been experimenting with the whiting, corn starch, linseed oil mix putty- home-made style. It works great, but the application is very difficult. I want to try and find out about ways to apply the mixture loose, and spread it over the whole floor. Can you help?

Hardwood floors installed over zipcrete

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I live in a condo and recently had hardwood floors installed in my kitchen and living room. The contractor used nails versus glue. The original floor in my kitchen was vinyl and under the vinyl is zipcrete. I was told by another contractor that my floors should have been installed with glue and not nails and that my hardwood floors will not stay secure. Is this true? If so, what should I do to correct the problem?

Adding a coat of urethane

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

We are moving into a house where the wood floors were totally redone after the prior owners moved out. Our inspector suggested that because we have a dog and small children that an additional coat or two or urethane may be wise. How much can I expect to pay for this, and is sanding between coats necessary?
