Maple floors and dogs

Friday, May 12th, 2006

We’re currently building a house and am having 3” wide maple hardwood put in. Our concern is we have a large German Shepard and Jack Russel. We’d like to plan ahead and try to avoid the fate of some other folks asking questions. What is the best coating we should put on our hardwood prior to moving in to protect from the unsightly doggie scratches?

Is it possible to paint parquet flooring as an alternative to replacement?

Motor oil spills in garage

Friday, May 12th, 2006

I am planning to sand and finish a 60 year old pine or fir T&G garage floor that will be my workshop. One problem is that many years of motor oil spills have created deep oil stains that will not sand off. What kind of finish will be compatible with this damage, in terms of sticking to it? What kind of gap filler would be compatible for the 1/4″ gaps between the boards. This will be a heated space in winter.

Buff or sand a wood floor

Friday, May 12th, 2006

A contractor told me that my floors would benefit from having a buff and refinish rather than a full refinishing. Is it legitimate to take a wood floor that was refinished 7 year ago, and treat it in this way, or would it be a wiser use of money to refinish? The floors are still shiny, but they have various stains, scratches, and worn areas.

Finish flaked off

I have hardwood floors that are old and very dry. I sanded the old finish off, which was spotty and flaking off, but some of the wood looks gray and discolored. Is there any remedy besides replacement?

VOCs and ceramic based coating

Is the ceramic based coating on some pre-finished wood flooring really VOC free?

Picking species to compliment oak cabinets

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Our casual style home was built in 2000 and has light golden coloured oak cabinets. We want to install engineered wood flooring, but are confused as to what type of wood to use that would compliment our existing oak cabinetry, rather than match it with another like oak wood. I am drawn to warm reddish tones like Brazilian Cherry, Merbau, and Mahogany, however, I am afraid these might be too contrasting.

Product for restoring floor causes build-up

Monday, May 8th, 2006

I recently made the mistake of ordering something off the Internet to restore my floor. I put some on our sealed hardwood floors and it looked great. It looks like a clear white wax. the next time I put on a coat, it didn’t look so good. So, we decided it was time for it to come off. I called the people who made it and they said they didn’t know how to get it off. What is the best way to get up a wax type product, which I shouldn’t have used in the first place? I’ve read on the Internet everything from ammonia to ice down and chipping it up. I have it on every floor in the house and would like an easier solution than ice.

Did you try the Bare Floor cleaner?

Moisture content

Monday, May 8th, 2006

We installed our hardwood floors in Nov-05 and about six months later the floor started lifting. I had a gentleman come and do a moisture test and he mentioned the moisture should be 14% or below my moisture was at 25%. We have pulled all the floor up again and are wanting to redo it but can you please suggest what an individual can to put on their floor if there is moisture?

Vinegar and water or oil soap?

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Our home was built in 1991 and has hardwood floors. I don’t know for sure, but it looks like oak. How do I know for certain if the floor has a polyurethane finish? For now I have used vinegar and water, or oil soap to clean the floors. Are these OK to use?

Dark watermarks

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

We took carpeting up from our bedroom which has hardwood floors underneath. When cleaning the carpet from pet urine there are severe dark watermarks. Is there a way to lighten the marks before sanding and refinishing?

Plywood subfloor plus tongue and groove hardwood?

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

I just built a wood sub-floor over concrete and installed 15/32 plywood. Is this plywood thick enough to install tongue and groove hardwood floor over?

2-Sided adhesive from chairs makes for gooey mess

Monday, May 1st, 2006

My husband recently put 2-sided adhesive on the bottom of our chairs so they would not slide around. I now have gooey adhesive on my wood floor. What should I use to clean it so as not to ruin the wood flooring?

Hump in hardwood landing

Monday, May 1st, 2006

I have wooden flooring in my split level home. They are nice floors, but the middle of the top hall way landing is like a hump or raised a little. The house is built circa 1967, is this OK or a structural problem?

Floating hardwood floor

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Is there such a thing as a floating hardwood floor? I have seen hardwood flooring that has a “uniclic” design which looks like it can be floating. If so, what types of things should I consider for installing it in my new (less than 5 year old) condo? Would there be a sub floor over the concrete?

Install hardwood through a doorway

Monday, May 1st, 2006

How do you install hardwood through a doorway? Do you start to nail on the groove side to fill in the back half after your first plank goes through the doorway?

Nails in floor

Monday, May 1st, 2006

I ripped up the carpet and want to refinish the oak floors. I’ve spent 12 hours pulling staples out and am stumped what to do about the nails. There are all kinds of nails in the floor, some I pulled out, all different lengths but with the rest (and I mean about 40) all I am managing to do it damage the floor or pull the nail heads off. Is there a better tool to use - I’m using a hammer, pliers, and a thing that looks like a flat head screwdriver with a slit in it. If I start hammering them down with a nail set I’m going to have an awful lot of ugly putty spots right in the middle of the floor. I was hoping to save some money doing the floors myself, I just want them to look ‘good’ but every professional I contact wants to replace every board with the slightest imperfection and make them look stunning! It’s an old house, I don’t want to pay for brand new looking floors.
