Dent

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

I have recently put bamboo flooring in my living room. I accidentally dragged something across the floor that made a dent about ΒΌ wide, and not very deep,(only enough to see). Is there anything you can recommend to bring it up?

Hurricane Katrina buckled hardwood floors

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

My home is about 50 years old. Our hardwood floors were covered with water for about 3 weeks thanks to hurricane Katrina. The floors are attached to a wooden sub flooring with tongue and groove and a nail every 10 inches. There is some very minor buckling but a black spot appears at all the nails. Can this be removed by sanding?

Carefully removing boards

My hardwood floors were installed under the kitchen cabinets and have not held up well. I would like to replace them with wider planks, but how do you remove the old flooring without tearing out the kitchen cabinets?

Nail holes and moisture

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

We just had a 3/4 inch common white oak floor put into the addition of our house. It is way too dark and even after bleaching it is still too dark. We would like to have it replaced. How do we deal with any damage that may occur to the subfloor? Will air and moisture be able to come through nail holes from crawl space under floor?

Oil or water to match

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

We just had the floors redone using an oil based polyurethane and I’m trying to get the stairs to match. The problem is the stairs were originally done with a water based polyurethane. Do I need to completely sand down the floors or can I apply the oil based polyurethane over the existing water based polyurethane? Will the oil based polyurethane warm up the wood or will it be dulled because of the previous water based poly?

Toxic Swedish finish

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

My builder’s wonderful flooring company installed red oak hardwood floors on the whole main floor of our house and now I hear that Europe banned the Swedish finish used on our floors almost 20 years ago. I need to know how toxic these floors are and is there a finish I can apply over the finish in order to seal in the gassing off?
