What do you think about water-based finishes containing aluminum oxide?
You won’t be able to keep out all chemicals, but you may be able to reduce the VOCs in your home by making environmentally friendly choices whenever possible. More than ever there are companies devoted to making safer products for your home. By being VOC-conscious you’ll also reduce the amount of hazardous waste being dumped into landfills when the time comes to dispose of your less hazardous belongings. As an unrelated but added bonus the time it takes to research products may prevent unnecessary purchases that would just add clutter to your home and put a hole in your pocketbook. Being toxin conscious thus has a myriad of positive effects!
Besides vacuuming regularly, you can wipe your floors clean with a solution made for the type of floor finish you have. Various homemade cleaners and general cleaners on the market can leave residues that will make your floors dull, or create problems with the finish when the time comes to recoat your floors.
Would you please advise me of the ratings for hardwoods as far as durability is concerned?
We just moved in our house 8 weeks ago and have already had 2 plumbing leaks which have resulted in buckling our brand new solid hardwood floors. I have talked to my installer of the floors and he said it would take 3 to 4 months to completely dry out and with time they would go down. They aren’t coming completely up yet but are very wavy. Do you think that it is truly possible that they may go down? I am hoping that the worse case scenario would be that they can just be sanded and refinished. What are your thoughts?
I just put hardwood floors, pre-finished, into my new condo. I love the color and grain of the wood I chose, but it is not shiny enough. my floor installer told me that adding polyurethane will only make it shine for around a month. Is this true?
I just had my hundred year old oak floors sanded, stained and polyed by my contractor. He cut the floors, which are either 12″x12″ square parquet or 2″ long planks, with a rented belt sander and used a hand held edger. The floors looked normal once sanded, with some scratches here and there, but good for their age. They looked normal after the stain as well, but once the ploy went down thin ridges appeared up and down the majority of the floors. Are these marks from the sander? Can the poly be buffed and screened or do we need to start over and use a finer grit to solve the problem? Also, on the new pine planks in another room, the poly appears scuffed and the stain appears noticeably lighter along two of the four walls.
We installed an engineered hardwood floor in our kitchen. When we were putting in the epoxy grout on the granite counters we got a few spots on the floor. Is there any way we can get them out?
How do you feel about the durability of water-based finishes containing aluminum oxide? my installer wants to use it, he says he will use 3 coats, or I stick with an oil based poly. The less fumes and recoat time is appealing to me.
What is the best product for staining pine and maple floors? I need the stain to spread evenly and not dry blotchy.
I am refinishing some wood floors. I put the stain on in both rooms, in one room the floor was sticky from the stain. It has been 48 hours and this room is still sticky!
I recently removed carpet and rubber padding from a bedroom (which did not stick) and removed all staples from a beautiful oak floor . The problem is the oak floor feels oily! Is this because it has been covered for so many years? What should I use to clean this up? The house is approximately 50 yrs old.
I sanded my living floor over the last two days. Last night I scrubbed the floor to prepared for putting the finish on this morning. I woke up to a disaster. There are areas where the wood looks like it’s dotted in black. Also, a ring where the pale was. Would bleach help, or do I re-sand? Ugh, my back hurts.
I need to remove parquet flooring in order to put 3/4” solid wood down. What is the easiest way to do this?
I just had Polyurethane Maple flooring put in 6 months ago. Today I cleaned the floors with my *** ***** machine. Too much water came out of the machine onto the floor. I now have warps at the end of the planks. How can I correct this?
I had 3/8″ oak hardwood floors installed over the solid concrete slab. The slab was not properly floated and there are areas the adhesive did not adhere to the slab or floor and there are also areas of deflection.
What can be done to repair the floor without having the installer remove and replace the new floor?
I had prefinished oak flooring laid in my new home three months ago. There are several boards with cracks forming in them. One was so bad they had to replace it. Can you tell me why this is happening? Do I have a poor quality floor or was the installation not done properly? They had tested the humidity and said it was okay.
I left a bucket with clothes cleaning solution on our maple floor. Now there is a dark ring on the floor. How do I get it out?
My son is in a power wheelchair. To get to his room he needs to cross the den and I would like to replace it with wood. I’m understanding that the laminating would be easier to keep from getting damaged. Please let me know if a laminated one would work better than a hardwood one. It will get a lot of wear and tear.
My stairs are a year old natural oak colour, with no stain on them. We simply want to stain them a darker stain. What is the ballpark cost of hiring someone to do this?
