Quarter round

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Is there any reason to use quarter round when installing hardwood floors. I am going to have oak floors installed(not prefinished) and want baseboard molding put up as well. The installers want to put up quarter round in addition to the baseboard moldings. Does this sound correct? I would think you install one or the other, not both?

Staining wood filler

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

I am a first time home remodeler and have run into the problem of staining nail holes filled with wood putty. I have used the following products with poor results: ********** “Stainable” Wood Filler, ******* Wood Dough, and ********** Wood Filler. Regardless of sanding and multiple coats of stain the putty areas are clearly visible. What suggestions do you recommend? By the way, is it possible to mix the putty with the stain that will be applied.

Dark rings on floor

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

My boyfriend left a set of tires (don’t ask!) on his hardwood floor. There are now dark rings on the floor that will not come off with regular cleaning. Do you have a suggestion on how to get rid of these marks?

We have 2 large golden retrievers who have scratched the polyurethane finish on our hardwood floors. Should we sand all the way down or just part way? What is the hardest finish to use to minimize future damage?

When to replace rugs

How long do I need to wait before putting the rugs back on a newly refinished (oil based) hardwood floor? The manufacture suggests 3 days before replacing the furniture, but what about the rugs?

Lots of repairs

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

My newly uncovered 125 year old 5/4 inch pine plank floors have some high and low undulations. Also, clearly someone used a sander on the floor and removed some but not all the paint before putting on a linoleum floor. There are many random spots with some paint that remains. One contractor told me he had to do the whole floor by hand to remove the paint and to avoid sanding off too much of the surface to flatten the floor. I wondered why an orbital could not be used instead of hand work. I guess it could be if done non aggressively applied. Correct? How would you attack such a floor? Would a floor sander really remove all the “character” from such a floor. What about replacing some missing 5/4 planks with 3/4 inch planks that are shimmed up, or faced on the bottom with a half inch board?

Bleach on hardwood

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

I have ruined my hardwood floor by leaving a plastic shopping bag with a bathroom cleaner containing bleach in it overnight. I didn’t realize it but the bottle had a small leak and has bleached part of the stain off of the hardwood floors. It has also smeared into a dark stain on part of it also like a swirl. Is there anything that I can do other than re staining that part of the floor?

Finish peels off

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

I am looking at refinishing a oak hardwood floor that has had a product called gymnasium 401 on it. I am wondering how I remove it without damaging the stain under it? What would I use to refinish it after? There are a few spots where the finish has peeled of and there was duct tape put on it to hold down cardboard when the people moved out and the tape is taking the finish of also?

Swirls with an orbital sander

Monday, August 15th, 2005

A contractor told me that an orbital sander will leave swirls in a
125 year old wide plank pine floor, and that the floor needed to be
hand sanded. Is this in your experience?

Glue on subfloor

Monday, August 15th, 2005

I am installing 3/4″ hardwood flooring in my kitchen and dining room. Currently there is carpet. I have been pulling the carpet up, however, there is a lot of glue still left on the floor. Do I have to remove the glue? Can I just lay the felt paper over the glue and then install the wood floor?

Salvage a nailed and stained floor

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

We have clear fir wood floors that we discovered under old shag carpet in our old farmhouse. In some places it is beautiful, but in our living and dining rooms there is glue and paint stains. The worst part of it is they filled the floor with nails (apparently to silence squeaking) before carpeting. What can we do to salvage this floor and make it look nice again?

Gaps over the winter

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

We moved into our new house last fall. Over the winter our floors started gapping. I contacted the home builder and he talked with the flooring guys and they said it was due to low humidity in the home. I installed a humidifier but by then the cold weather was almost over. I also bought a humidity gauge and it reads over 40% most of the time. The floor guys claimed the gaps would close by themselves but its now July and we have noticed little if any improvement. Our warranty on the home will be over in November so I was wondering how long it normally takes these boards to fix themselves.

Water stains on unprotected floor

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

I have just moved into a house which is 55 years old. I have oak floors which have been sanded down but no protective coating on them. A large plant that I have has now left water stains on the oak and I am wondering how to remove the water stains. What do you suggest?
