On my main floor that has plywood floor, do I need to put down black 15 lb. construction paper before installing my 3/4″ hardwood flooring?
I just bought a house (1949) in Toronto that has 3/8″ strip hardwood. From the other Q and A I can see that this type of floor can withstand 2 (maybe 3) sandings over its lifetime. How can I tell if there is still a sanding left in these floors? If the floors cannot be sanded, are there other options than just replacing - e.g. chemical stripping, recoating?
Hardwood meets tile… I have two doorways or thresholds where my hardwood floor (solid ¾ x 3-1/4” white oak) will meet with ceramic tile. The boards will run parallel against the tile. The expanse of flooring is approximately 10-12 feet total in this area . The wood and tile will be the same height. I don’t like the look of t-moldings and other transitions. Would it be okay to leave a ¼ inch gap between the tile & wood and fill it with some “sanded” caulking that matches the tile grout? How about where the floor meets a sliding glass door? Could I do something similar? (smaller expansion gap and caulk instead of a molding?)

You have just installed hardwood flooring in your home. Now what? How do you keep your hardwood floors clean and shiny? Read the following Q&A in which two hardwood floor owners are asking just that.
Q: “I was reading your site and saw that one should not use oil based cleaners. Why? Our […]
Would American Cherry hold up in a high traffic kitchen area? Would this be a good choice?
I have lap marks on my hardwood floor from the stain. Is there any way of minimizing or removing these, short of starting all over again?
I recently had hardwood floors ( oak ) installed. During the installation one of the workmen had some glue stuck to his boot and left glue spots in 5 or 6 areas of the floor. The glue is in spots and is not thick but is noticeable. Is there any product or suggestion you may have to assist us in removing the glue? Without removing the finish?
What type of top coat do you recommend on hard maple flooring? We already have two coats of gloss; however, our contractor stated that he will apply a finishing top coat when all other work has been completed in our new construction home. The contractor recommended matte finish. What are the differences between the finishes?
I want to replace some damaged parquet floor (four square feet) in our living room using undamaged flooring from a closet. Is this possible and what process would you suggest?
We have about an 80 year old house and it has what I assume to be oak hardwood flooring. The flooring is textured. When we were in the process of moving in a full can of latex flat white paint got tipped over and the top came off. Almost the entire can of paint spilled onto the floor. We cleaned up a much as we could but some of it soaked into the “groove” in the textured flooring and I can’t get it out. I’ve tried water and below grease, ******, WD-40, and light scraping. I don’t care if the floors need recoating. I just need the paint up. Any ideas?
We just finished installing a 3/4″ solid , pre-finished hardwood floor in our bedroom. While installing a phone cord, we drilled a hole from under the house right through our newly laid floor. Is there a way to repair the hole without taking out the entire board?
We have dark mahogany high gloss floors. Beautiful. We’ve been careful with them for two years, but now a worker has dragged a piece of furniture and scuffed the gloss. About 1/2 inch wide and 10 ft. long. Light scratch. It looks like it only got the polyurethane. Can I go over just that scuff with a small brush and more poly? If not what can I use?
What is the recommended relative humidity for a house in mixed climate (heat & Air condition)? The house is equipped with a humidifier to regulate the RH during the heating season. The house is equipped with forced air heat but, at night, the owners shut down the forced air and heat with wall radiators with hot water circulated from a gas fired boiler. The *** Pine flooring is shrinking, leaving unsightly cracks between the boards (some, but not all).
Is is better to have 2 or 3 coats of polyurethane when refinishing hardwood floors?
I have recently sanded, stained and varnished the floors. They Look really nice but the last coat has accumulated air bubbles. I was wondering if there is a quick and easy way for me to remove the top layer containing the air bubbles and re vanishing them. Or, is there any solution, like sprays or liquids to minimize the air bubbles to make them disappear?
About 4 months ago we put down new 3/4″ thick oak flooring (unfinished). We thought we followed the proper procedures the whole way through, but we are very quickly noticing something did not go right. After sanding and staining, we applied Olympic Oil Based Sanding Sealer. We followed up with multiple coats of ******** Based Polyurethane. The urethane coating seems to be “bubbling” (but not breaking) between each board and the connections. My guess was that I didn’t buff enough between coats. What do I need to do to repair this?
What kind of underfelt should I use under my area rug on my bamboo floor. I was told not to use rubber, is this true?
I recently bought a home with a hardwood floor. The floors are ******** and I bought a touch up kit that went along with the floors. After I used the touch up kit the polyurethane finish is dull (and of course it’s a conspicuous area). I cannot get the shine to match the rest of the floor. Is there anything I can do?
I am refinishing a 4×4 oak floor. I would like to know if I can use a vibrating sander instead of renting a floor sander.
My son had a party in his new home. His wood floors got scratched and dented by high heels in some areas. Is there an easy way to fix this? Would heat from a hair dryer lift the wood?
